Wendy Morrell - Mosaicist

Portrait of Wendy MorrellI became passionate about Mosaic Art in the mid 1990s while living in London. My observations through visits to the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum inspired me to explore and broaden my interests, experience and artistic desires, especially in Mosaic Art.

While visiting Paris, Barcelona and New York, I was enthused by the mosaic designs on architectural features including floors, pillars, door entrances; and three-dimensional objects such as vases and fountains. This led me to research further into mosaics and art history in general.

Upon completing two Master Classes in England, I arrived back in Australia in 1997 to continue my dedication to produce and present numerous mosaic artworks at a quality standard.

Mosaic Art has now become a part of a collective consciousness in design in today's society. Also, it is the oldest, most durable and most functional art form, with colours that never fade, and materials that withstand sun, rain, frost and even centuries of burial. In practice, it needs to be carefully conceived, designed, planned and executed for a truly professional finish.

Mosaic tiling as a medium is seen mostly as an architectural embellishment for buildings. Mosaic is one of many mediums that is utilised in applied arts.

As a Mosaicist, I thrive on the inspired results from the "search for ideas", e.g. colour combinations and shapes of silhouettes. I believe in attention to detail in my artwork and to achieve an aesthetically pleasing result of Mosaic Art. My passion for Mosaic Art led me to complete a B.A. in Visual Arts in 2007: this allowed a more streamlined academic approach to these areas.
